One of the most common questions I get when booking a professional head shot session is what to wear.

There are many opinions on the subject, but I always share a few things to consider when choosing the perfect outfit.

The first thing I tell all of my clients is to try to stay away from “busy patterns”. Having a loud or busy pattern will distract away from the main focus, you. However, for the ladies, patterns are okay as long as you have a solid color jacket to wear over top. That breaks up the pattern so it isn’t distracting.

Men look great with a sports coat and a nice shirt or the suit and tie route. Depending on how formal you prefer the portrait you can wear either.

The ladies look great with solid colors such as blue, black, and even red. I also suggest wearing something with long sleeves whether that is a jacket or shirt is up to you. Simple jewelry is also a great option to keep the focus on you.
