"Being Natural Is Simply A Pose, And The Most Irritating Pose I Know" | Gretchen Elaine Photography Guide To Posing

One of the biggest questions I get at every portrait session is, “How should I pose?” or “What do I do with my hands?” The number one thing most photographers say is, “Just be natural”. This is true, the most natural poses are the most beautiful. But as soon as those three words are said, most people stiffen up and look like a deer in headlights! Fortunately, I have a couple tricks when it comes to using natural comfortable poses for every portrait session.

I tell everyone that the first handful of photos are like practice. Getting comfortable being in front of the camera just takes practice. I also like to talk to them about their interests and hobbies which usually makes their faces light up. Being personable is a plays a big part of all Gretchen Elaine Photography’s portrait sessions.

Besides talking to my clients, I always bring an assortment of props to use depending on what kind of portrait session it is. For example; with kids, I bring bubbles, toys, and even snacks. For seniors and more young adult portraits I have brought everything from hats, sunglasses, umbrellas, and the list goes on. Bringing props gives them something to do or hold and makes them feel more comfortable and adds to their photos in a beautiful way. Props can also make their personalities come alive and stand out in their images.
